My First Biggest Achievement: Choosing What I Really Want

Writer's picture: Kirsten AlcazarKirsten Alcazar

Back then I was still young, I didn’t know anything about the course psychology.

I didn’t even know that it exists.  I never thought I will be here. Before, during my elementary days, when someone asked what do I like to become in the future, my answer always changed from being a teacher to a doctor and so on.

It is not because I changed my mind or it is what I really like. The truth is I don’t know what I want before, I just answer that just to have an answer, because that is what most people want to become for themselves, and because that is what most parents want for their children.

When I entered high school, it is when I got my own dreams. There are a lot of things I want to do and become. But psychology still didn’t cross my mind. But as years go by, little by little, I got to know about it.

Someone inspired, motivated and pushed me to do it. On the way to SHS, during the time we were made to decide what track to choose, I remembered my mom asking me what I really want to do.  I answered “gusto ko yung tumutulong sa tao,” I told myself that

I don’t want to become an ordinary employee or office worker, I want a profession that can help people.

Enrolling in college had been difficult. Because I’m still quite confused on what to take, there are still a lot of things I want, mostly on the medical field/course. But the day had come; I made up my mind and decided to take Psychology. I thought that it is where I belong. This course is suited for me. There must be a reason for it. I will go and find the meaning of it.

Psychology was taken from the 2 Greek words, “psyche” and “logos” – meaning soul and mind study (mind and matter

Psychology is the science that studies systematically the behavioral and mental processes of the individual human being and other animals.

Some Importance of Psychology:

Adding awareness to our lives by deepening knowledge of ourselves and those around us.

Teach the unknown and undiscovered things about ourselves.

Enlarge and sensitize ability to understand each other, have empathy towards other

      people.

Psychology can be an exciting and attracting field to explore. It can lead us to a new understanding and gain more knowledge of people and life.

As we go along, every turn could be a path to new perception about ourselves and others - why we are what we are now and why they are what they are, why we feel and think this way as we do and why they feel and think as they do.

These insights give chance and hold hope of making us more aware, understanding and self-actualized individuals, and of effecting more meaningful human relationships. Psychology is more interesting because we ourselves are the subject matter. It’s fascinating to study, providing an insight into the way we think, behave and live. Who wouldn’t be captivated in understanding himself more and others better?

As psychology majors we study about cognitive, developmental, behavioral and neural context, learning theories of personality and experimental psychology and so on. We had pile of paperwork/school works to do and submit on time such as: Statistical Report (Instrument Reliability Testing), Special Paper, Research Paper on Brain Damage /Neuropsychological Disorders, Experimental Research, Case Study, Action Research.

We also had learning experiences outside the classroom by attending seminars, joining contest, going on exposure trip, as well as participating in internships.

Unfortunately, there are some misconceptions about this field of study. They say that

         psychology is for the “baliw”

that Psychology students can read minds, and call them

           “manghuhula”

That’s not true

We don’t read minds, we analyze.

We don’t have powers to know what you are thinking or what’s in your head;

we just simply analyze, understand and interpret your actions and behaviors.

Psych majors are not crazy, they help people with mental illnesses.

“Being a psychologist or counselor is more than just a profession” They can be someone’s hero in their own little ways. They also save lives just like doctors, policemen and other professions do, by opening their eyes, lending their ears, saying or talking nicely using their voice through the mouth, sharing their heart and extending their hands/arms to anyone who’s in need.

They’ve been the punching bag of our problems and carrier of our burdens in life. They want to inspire and motivate others, to see the beauty of life.

As long as there are people, there is psychology.
